I just released a new site - ScreenResolution.org to collect the screen solution information from internet users. it shows the screen resolution of your current monitor, provides screen resolution realtime statistics.

If you are a web designer or a webmaster, you should check browser compatibility before publishing your web pages(Example: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc..), you also want to know what is the most common screen resolution? If you don't test your pages using different screen resolutions, your page may be stretched to fit a large screen, or be cropped to fit a small screen.

When I built my first personal web site in 1999, the majority of visitors (58%) arriving my site used a display resolution of 800x600, 22% used 1024x768. This situation has changed, and today, 48% used 1024x768, 8% used 800x600.

I just released a new site - ScreenResolution.org to collect the screen solution information from internet users. it shows the screen resolution of your current monitor, provides screen resolution realtime statistics since Dec 12, 2008.

Google released Chrome beta on Sep 02, 2008. In just 100 days, Google has just announced that Google Chrome is ready for real consumers on real computers by cutting off their “beta” sign from the new browser.

The new version of Google Chrome including following features:

Better stability and performance of plug-ins (particularly video).

Video and audio glitches were among the most common bugs fixed during the beta period.

Even more speed.

Google Chrome starts up fast, loads pages quickly, and just keeps getting faster.

Bookmark manager and privacy controls.

Better bookmark features were a top request from our users. It's now easier to switch between another browser and Google Chrome with the bookmark import and export features, and we added a new simple way to manage large numbers of bookmarks, too.

Posted by Andrew

Digital magazine provider Zinio offers up the current issues of 23 magazines - including
U.S. News & World Report, Popular Photography, PC Magazine, Technology Review, Macworld, Elle, Car and Driver, Outside, Playboy, Penthouse
for free full-browsing by iPhone users. However, you can change the non-iPhone browsers User agent string to that of iPhone and you will be access them for free. :-)

What is User-agent?

A user agent is the client application used with a particular network protocol;
the phrase is most commonly used in reference to those which access the World Wide Web, but other systems such as SIP use the term user agent to refer to the user's phone.
Web user agents range from web browsers and e-mail clients to search engine crawlers ("spiders"),
as well as mobile phones, screen readers and braille browsers used by people with disabilities.
When Internet users visit a web site, a text string is generally sent to identify the user agent to the server.
This forms part of the HTTP request, prefixed with User-Agent:
(case does not matter) and typically includes information such as the application name, version, host operating system, and language.
Bots, such as web crawlers, often also include a URL and/or e-mail address so that the webmaster can contact the operator of the bot.

- Wikipedia.org, User Agent

If you are using Internet Explorer,
Firefox or Safari,
you can modify the user-agent string through add-ons or registry, it's very easy.
Unfortunately, Google Chrome
doesn't support externsions yet and the user-agent doesn't store in registry. You must directly modify the chrome.dll -
open chrome.dll in a Hex editor, search Google Chrome User-agent string and then overwrite it.

How to Change Google Chrome User-agent String

To change Google Chrome User-agent string, please do following steps:

Launch a Hex editor program(Example: Abdio Hex Editor).
I'm a VC++ developer so I launch Microsoft Visual Studio 2005.

Once you have installed Google Chrome on your computer, please open following folder with Windows Explorer:

Windows XP:

C:/Documents and Settings/{User Name}/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/Application/{Ver Number}/

Windows Vista:

C:/Users/{User Name}/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/Application/{Ver Number}/

On my Vista computer, the folode is:

C:/Users/Andrew/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/Application/0.3.154.9/

Please close Google Chrome if running, and then backup chrome.dll file in above folder.

Open chrome.dll with binary mode. In Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, press Ctrl + O hotkey, choose chrome.dll, then click Open With button, choose Binary Editor on the dialog.

Search user-agent string for Google Chrome:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT %d.%d; en-US) AppleWebKit/%d.%d (KHTML, like Gecko) %s Safari/%d.%d

Overwrite user-agent string. The string for iPhone is:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543 Safari/419.3

Note: If the length of iPhone string exceeds the original string of Chrome, DO NOT INSERT ANY STRING in chrome.dll. The replaced string in my chrome.dll file is:

Mozilla/5.0 (IPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebkit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/

Save chrome.dll, and then launch Google Chrome browser. If you start Google Chrome failed after saving changes, please restore chrome.dll from backup.

Type about: in the address bar to confirm if the user-agent has changed.

You can also visit http://www.HttpUserAgent.org, it will show your user-agent string online.

Read Popular Magazines for Free

Now, you can type http://imgs.zinio.com/iphone/ in the Google Chrome address bar and start access the popular magazines for free!

The current version of Google Chrome
supports for importing bookmakrs
from Internet Explorer, FireFox and other browsers. You can just click menu Tools |
Import Bookmarks and settings to complete the importing task.
Unfortunately, if you want to move the Chrome bookmarks to a new computer,
you will notice that Google Chrome does not yet have a way to export bookmarks. :-(

There is a FAQ in Google Chrome help:

Bookmarks: Export bookmarks

This feature is not available at the moment. If you imported your bookmarks from another browser, your data should still be available in the original browser.

If you search "Export Google Chrome bookmarks" in Google,
you will find some programs to help you synchronize the bookmarks.
However, there is a easy way to do that, you needn't install any programs!

Once you have installed Google Chrome on your computer, please open following folder with Windows Explorer:

Windows XP:

C:/Documents and Settings/{User Name}/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/User Data/Default/

Windows Vista:

C:/Users/{User Name}/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/User Data/Default/

In that folder, you will find a file named Bookmarks:

You can directly backup this file. To Synchronize your bookmarks to a new comptuer, just copy the file to the same folder on your new computer,
and then restart Google Chrome, all of your bookmarks will now be there!

Developed by Andrew.

With IE or Firefox, we can install Google Toolbar and Alexa Toolbar to check the Google PageRank and Alex Rank. Unfortunately, the current version of Google Chrome doesn't support any extensions such as Google Toolbar and Alex toolbar. So I developed a Javascript Plug-in that allows Google Chrome user to check the PageRank of the page you are browsing. It's a bookmarklet(a bookmark containing JavaScript) in practice, you can also use it in FireFox, Safari or Inetnet Explorer. See example:

Install Google Chrome Plugin: PageRank Status Checker

To install Chrome Google Pagerank Plug-in, please do following steps:

The way A:

Make sure your Google Chrome browser always shows the Bookmarks bar. If not, click menu: Tools -> Always show bookmarks bar.

Drag and drop
    PageRank Status
    to your Chrome bookmarks bar.

The way B:

Make sure your Google Chrome browser always shows the Bookmarks bar. If not, click menu: Tools -> Always show bookmarks bar.

Right click on the bookmarks bar, and then select Add Page.

In the Name field, enter "PageRank Status" or something you will remember, then for the URL field paste:

javascript:void(window.open("http://www.chromefans.org/pr/?u="+escape(location.href), "PageRank%20Status%20-%20ChromeFans","width=405,height=120,top=0,left=0,location=0"))

Now the Javascript plugin is installed in your Google Chrome. You can click "PageRank Status" button to view the Page Rank information.

Google Chrome is released on Sep 02, 2008, it is available for only Windows XP and Vista. Why is Google Chrome browser not compatible with Windows 2000?

Lots of people still have Windows 2000. Some people have Windows XP or Vista at home, at work it is Windows 2000, - corporate users are much more conservative. Some people use Windows 2000 because they don't like the look of Windows XP. they prefer the classic Windows Logo, and the classic theme.

Why is Windows 2000 not supported?

I think perhaps because:

Today is 2008.

Windows 2000 Server's mainstream support ended June 30, 2005. While extended support will be available until July 13, 2010.

We are already going from Windows XP sp3 to Vista, and the next OS is being designed.

Update: On the comment #1, the webmaster of surfchrome.com said that's less than 1%(0.72%) of visitors used Windows 2000 to visit his site last month. I just checked last month stats of ChromeFans, only 0.45% used Windows 2000:

Windows XP: 62.54%

Windows Vista: 21.95%

Mac OS : 1.63%

Windows 2003: 1.05%

Windows 2000: 0.45%

If you want to download Google Chrome on Windows 2000, there is an article from NSpeaks: Google Chrome on Windows 2000/2k?
Google Chrome has security measures in place to help protect you as you browse the Web. To adjust your security settings to high level, please do following steps:

Click the Tools menu, then then select Option

Click the Under the Hood tab and find the 'Security' section, as it is shown in following screenshot:

Note: it's not advisable to change these settings unless you're sure of what you're doing. You can always click the Reset to defaults button to clear any changes you've made

Adjust the security options of Google Chrome

Enable phishing and malware protection

This option is on by default. When enabled, Google Chrome warns you if you attempt to visit a webpage that is suspected to be dangerous.

* Extern Link: What is phishing - In computing, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Select trusted SSL certificates

Click the Manage certificates button to open the Windows Certificates dialog box. About managing certificates in Windows, visit http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771377.aspx.

* What's SSL? - Secure Sockets Layer. An Internet protocol used by many websites to ensure safe data encryption and transmission.

* What's Certificate - When you connect to a secure website, the server hosting that website presents Google Chrome and other browsers with a certificate to verify its identity. Certificates contain information like the address of the website, which is confirmed by a third party organization. By analyzing whether the web address in the certificate matches the address of the website, the certificate's expiration date, and its third-party verifier, Google Chrome confirms that you're securely communicating with the website you intended, and not someone pretending to be that website.

Set computer-wide SSL settings

Use SSL 2.0: The default value is unchecked. This is an older version of the SSL protocol that is less secure. However, some websites may require visitors to use this version when browsing. If so, select this option only if you trust the website.

Check for server certification revocation: Turn on real-time verification for the validity of a website's certificate, for extra security. the default value is checked.

Control display of mixed content on secure webpages

Sometimes, an SSL-secured website (denoted by 'https' in its web address) loads parts of its content from insecure resources. Content from insecure sources can be viewed by others as a webpage is loading and information is transmitting. Malicious parties could potentially modify these insecure resources and change the look and behavior of the webpage without your knowledge or consent.

By default, all content is displayed, but an alert icon appears at the end of the address bar when you encounter a webpage with mixed content.

You can use the drop-down menu to adjust the level of mixed content that is displayed:

Block all insecure content: With this option, broken image icons appear in the place of insecure images. Frames and iframes are replaced by a red box. You can override this setting for a particular webpage during your current browsing session by clicking on the Show all content link on the message that appears at the top of the page.

Allow insecure images: Insecure images load, but are marked so that you can identify them.

Allow all content to load: All web elements load regardless of their security state.

Adjust cookie settings

Use the drop-down menu to adjust cookie permission levels for websites you visit

Allow all cookies: This is the default setting in Google Chrome. This option lets first-party and third-party websites set and receive cookies on webpages you visit. First-party cookies are set by the website you're visiting. Third-party cookies are set by websites that have items embedded in the website you're visiting, such as advertisements, pictures, or videos. When you next visit the website, first-party and third-party cookie information is sent back to the respective websites.

Restrict how third-party cookies can be used: First-party and third-party cookies can be set by the website you're visiting and websites that have items embedded in the website you're visiting. But when you next visit the website, only first-party cookie information is sent to the website. Third-party cookie information isn't sent back to the websites that originally set the third-party cookies.

Block all cookies: Prevent all cookies from being set by first-party and third-party websites. This will prevent most websites that require you to sign in from working.

* What's Cooikes? - Cookies are files created by websites you've visited to store user information, such as your preferences for the website or profile information. It's important to be aware of your cookie settings because cookies can allow websites to track your navigation during your visits to those websites. By default, Google Chrome lets cookies to be set on your computer because many websites rely on this capability.

The security settings on shared computers

Google Chrome saves separate information for each user account on a shared computer. However, if all users share one user account for a computer by signing in with the same Windows username and password, please be aware that you might accidentally come across another user's web-based email, passwords, browsing history, and downloaded files. To be safe, we recommend creating separate accounts for each user. Alternatively, you can turn off Google Chrome's option to save passwords and also clear any accumulated browsing information when you close Google Chrome.

Turn off save password feature

Click the Tools menu, then then select Clear browsing data

Click the Minor Tweaks tab.

In the Passwords section, select Never save passwords.

Click the Close button

Clear any accumulated browsing information when you close Google Chrome

Click the Tools menu, then then select Option.

Select the checkboxes for the types of information you wish to remove.

Click the Clear Browsing Data button.
